An Exposé: Who Really Runs Planet Earth?
INTRODUCTION
The Bible presents a tension that unsettles many believers:
-
God is declared the absolute Lord of Heaven and Earth
-
Yet Satan is called “the god of this world”
Is this a contradiction?
Is Satan ruling the planet?
Did God lose control?
Or is something deeper at work?
Jesus Himself addressed this tension more clearly than anyone else.
PART 1: “THE GOD OF THIS WORLD” — WHO SAID THIS AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Who said it?
The Apostle Paul, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Key Text
2 Corinthians 4:4 (KJV)
“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…”
Greek Meaning
The phrase is Greek, not Hebrew.
-
θεὸς (theos) – god, ruler, authority
-
τοῦ αἰῶνος (tou aiōnos) – of the age, era, world-system
-
τούτου (toutou) – this present one
➡ Literal meaning:
“The god of this present age”
This does NOT mean:
-
Creator
-
Owner of the earth
-
Equal to God
It means temporary influence over the fallen world system.
Jesus Confirmed This Concept (Not the Title)
Jesus never used the phrase “god of this world”, but He affirmed the reality behind it:
John 12:31 (KJV)
“Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.”
John 14:30 (KJV)
“The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”
John 16:11 (KJV)
“The prince of this world is judged.”
➡ Satan’s authority is:
-
Real
-
Limited
-
Judged
-
Temporary

Luke 10:21 (KJV)
“…Father, Lord of heaven and earth…”
➡ Jesus was referring to YHWH, the God of Israel, His Father.
HEBREW MEANING OF “LORD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH”
The phrase comes from the Old Testament worldview.
Hebrew Components
-
יְהוָה (YHWH) – The self-existent, eternal God
-
אֲדֹנָי (Adonai) – Master, Sovereign
-
שָׁמַיִם (Shamayim) – heavens (spiritual + cosmic realms)

The absolute sovereign over all realms—visible and invisible

PART 3: OLD TESTAMENT — DID GOD EVER LOSE CONTROL?
Absolutely not.
Psalm 24:1 (KJV)
“The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof.”
Daniel 4:35 (KJV)
“He doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth.”
Satan operates only by permission, never by ownership.
PART 4: HOW CAN BOTH STATEMENTS BE TRUE?
The Biblical Resolution
| God | Satan |
|---|---|
| Creator | Usurper |
| Owner | Temporary ruler |
| Eternal | Time-bound |
| Sovereign | Allowed influence |
| Judge | Already condemned |
➡ Satan rules systems, not substance
➡ God rules reality itself
PART 5: WHAT DID JESUS COME TO DO?
1 John 3:8 (KJV)
“For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”
Colossians 2:15 (KJV)
“Having spoiled principalities and powers…”
Jesus did not deny Satan’s influence—
He ended its legitimacy.
PART 6: JOHN PIPER & JOHN MACARTHUR (SUMMARY)
John Piper
-
Satan rules by deception
-
God rules by sovereignty
-
The cross exposed Satan’s power as derivative and temporary
John MacArthur
-
Satan is a usurper, not a king
-
His authority is judicially revoked
-
Christ is already reigning, though not yet fully manifested
Both agree:
Satan’s rule is real—but already defeated.
PART 7: WHAT ABOUT ATHEISTS & MODERN GNOSTICS?
Prominent Atheists (Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens)
-
Reject spiritual rulers entirely
-
Attribute evil to biology, psychology, power
-
Ironically describe the world exactly as Jesus did:
violent, deceptive, unjust
Modern Gnostics
-
Believe in a false ruler (Demiurge) controlling the material world
-
Strikingly close to Paul’s “god of this age”
-
But wrong in rejecting the Creator as good
➡ Christianity alone explains:
-
Evil without denying God
-
Satan without elevating him
-
Authority without dualism
CONCLUSION: WHO REALLY RUNS PLANET EARTH?
Not Satan.
Not man.
Not governments.
Revelation 11:15 (KJV)
“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ.”
Satan may manage the shadows—
but God owns the throne.
The cross settled the question.
The resurrection sealed the verdict.
The return of Christ will make it visible.
FINAL DECLARATION
Jesus Christ is not the Lord of Heaven only—
He is the Lord of Heaven and Earth.
