More than 27 people were killed, while several other were injured on Tuesday after suspected members of the dreaded Islamic sect Boko Haram invaded Sabon Gari village of Damboa Local Government Area of Borno state.

According to residents, the terrorists struck the village around 6pm, killing 20 residents while seven others were killed on Wednesday morning at the Sabon Gari cemetery while they were trying to bury the dead from Tuesday’s attack.

The residents who have already left the location said property worth millions of naira have been destroyed.

Only two days ago, some gunmen had attacked neighbouring Mandafuma village of Biu local government area of Borno State, injuring one person while property worth millions of Naira were destroyed alongside the main bridge linking Maiduguri- Damboa- Madafuma- Biu road to other parts of the country.

Sabon Gari is about 145 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital.

The Tuesday/Wednesday attack is the second in Sabon Gari in barely 12 days. The first was the attack in which a Commanding Officer of 195 Battalion and the Divisional Police Officer, 16 Soldiers and 6 Policemen alongside several terrorirts were killed. It was that severe attack that led to the withdrawal of Military troops from the village.

Mallam Iliyasu Ibrahim, a resident whose cousin was also killed in the attack said his sisters are missing after the attack on Tuesday, because the village is now deserted and people have fled for safety of their lives.

“No security operatives were deployed to restore normalcy,” Ibrahim said.

A top security source under the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

“More than 20 people were killed on Tuesday and Wednesday twin attacks on Sabon Gari village by suspected terrorists,” he said.
