Joseph Okolo, an Ibadan-based teacher, has detailed how he lost N105,000 because of an unsuccessful withdrawal at a First Bank ATM in Keffi, Lagos island.
Okolo had gone to the bank on May 27 to withdraw N40,000. He made a first withdrawal of N20,000, but his second attempt was unsuccessful. The machine withheld his debit card instead.
When Okolo explained his case to the bank’s security personnel, he was told to check back the following Tuesday because it was the weekend and the following Monday was a public holiday.

Okolo told www.aso.rocks that he got a debit notification of N105,000 barely an hour after he left the bank.
“I remember getting to the bank at around 10:30 am and leaving around 11:00 am. I suddenly got a debit alert of N105,000 from a PoS. It was barely an hour after I had left,” he explained.
Confused, Okolo called the bank to immediately place a restriction on his account to avoid losing more money. On May 30, Okolo went back to Keffi to lodge his complaint.
He told www.aso.rocks that the bank did not open because it was undergoing a renovation.
“I went back on Tuesday. There was an ongoing renovation, and the branch did not open that day. The security man I met told me to check back the following day,” Okolo said.

He further told www.aso.rocks that when he sent a complaint email, the bank sent him an image of the transaction receipt. According to the receipt, the withdrawal was made with a Monie Point machine at number 60, Obalende road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Okolo explained to www.aso.rocks that his third visit to the bank left him more confused than the first.
“When I asked a customer care official, she told me my case was not the first. She told me to follow her to the manager. After explaining all of the possible causes, all the manager could come up with was that the bank’s ATM journal recorded that my card was released,” he said.

He also explained to www.aso.rocks that he had started to doubt his own memory when he met one Simon Ejumariba, a victim of a similar circumstance.
www.aso.rocks contacted Ejumariba through a phone call on August 1. In his interview with www.aso.rocks, Ejumariba narrated how he lost N800,000, and how the bank denied his visit and threatened him with police arrest.
“I went to First Bank, Keffi, to make a withdrawal on May 28. The ATM did not release my card, and I went home. The security had told me to come back the following week,” Ejumariba said.
“I did not understand what was happening when I got multiple debit alerts from a PoS. In total, I lost N800,000 in a single day.”

Ejumariba told www.aso.rocks that he was finally allowed access to the bank on Wednesday.
“When I got to the bank on Wednesday and explained myself, the bank staff first tried to say I didn’t come to their bank. They almost made a fool out of me. I insisted that they check their camera. They did and saw that I visited. They had to look into my matter.
“But even after, the manager told me it was not their problem. He said that the money was withdrawn from my account with my card, and from a POS. No one tried to retrieve my card and my money.
“I have been going to the bank since then, and they’ve kept trying to make a fool of me. They are not only uninterested in helping get my money but they also threaten to arrest me if I don’t stop disturbing.
“I had just been paid off work when this happened. I was supposed to leave Lagos for my village.”
When www.aso.rocks contacted First Bank on Thursday, A. Ololade Adebayo Adepegba, an employee of the bank, asked that the customers contact them on the phone.
However, Okolo had already contacted the bank with no resolution.
