The Mirror We Refused to See

by abijohn.com

I used to ask myself how someone like Donald Trump could have possibly won in 2016 — and then again in 2024 — despite his open cruelty, moral decay, and emotional volatility. I don’t wonder anymore.

He won because of those things, not in spite of them.

Trump became a mirror. Every broken, bruised, and bitter part of the American psyche saw itself reflected in him — and felt seen, perhaps for the first time.

If you were racist, you found your voice in him.
If you were a misogynist, he spoke your language.
If greed ruled your heart, you found your champion.
If you mocked the weak, despised the intelligent, or preyed on others without remorse — you found your man.
If you lied, cheated, and called it “winning,” he became your reflection.
If you feared women, minorities, or empathy itself, he gave you permission to sneer again — out loud.

He wasn’t elected because of his virtues, but because his vices matched those of millions. If he had only a few flaws, he never would have connected. It was the sheer volume of them that made him irresistible. In him, America saw its collective shadow — and loved it.

Because for many, it was never about Trump. It was about finally feeling validated in their contempt. He gave moral cover to moral collapse. He turned cruelty into courage, and resentment into religion.

The most chilling sentence you’ll hear from his supporters is also the most revealing:

“He says the things I’m thinking.”

That’s the heart of it. It’s not about politics — it’s about psychology.

Who knew that tens of millions of Americans harbored such dark thoughts about their fellow citizens? Who knew that so many men felt so threatened by women, so many white Americans so resentful of progress, so many people so ready for permission to hate again?

Trump didn’t corrupt America — he revealed it.

We used to think we lived in a country steadily marching toward greater inclusion, equality, and empathy. Maybe that was a fantasy. Maybe we were just living in a fool’s paradise — until someone came along who made our collective dysfunction proud to show its face.

Now, we’re awake. And we can’t unsee what the mirror showed us.
