World soccer’s governing body, FIFA, has stepped into the leadership crisis plaguing the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) by authorizing a Normalisation Committee to take control and oversee a thorough administrative overhaul.

The temporary body will manage the federation’s daily operations and lay the groundwork for upcoming Executive Committee elections. According to an official communication from FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström addressed to Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will collaborate immediately to select the committee’s personnel.

To guarantee fairness and avoid conflicts of interest, FIFA has stipulated that no individual serving on the interim panel will be permitted to run in the forthcoming elections. The committee’s assignment must conclude no later than May 31, 2027, while the NFF Secretariat continues to handle basic operational responsibilities until the panel is inaugurated.

This decisive action follows months of administrative instability that reached a peak in August, when former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, ex-General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several board members vacated their posts. Following those abrupt resignations, the National Sports Commission appointed Dr. Ikpeme as acting General Secretary and Ademola Olajire as his deputy, while halting scheduled election proceedings to allow for structural adjustments.

The international intervention also aligns with directives from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who called for extensive reforms across the nation’s football apparatus. With FIFA now actively supervising the transition, the focus turns to establishing the caretaker group, implementing vital institutional reforms, and ultimately delivering a credible election within the designated timeline.
