President Bola Tinubu has authorized an 18-month tenure extension for the heads of Nigeria’s immigration and custodial authorities, a strategic step designed to prevent leadership voids and maintain the trajectory of critical sector reforms.
The policy benefits Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), and Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). Following the presidential directive, Nwakuche will stay in his role until May 26, 2028, while Nandap’s term will now conclude on June 30, 2028.
This resolution stems from advice submitted by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who emphasized the necessity of averting an abrupt change of guard while giving the supervisory board adequate runway to arrange seamless transitions.
Commending both agency chiefs for the transformative progress witnessed during their commands, President Tinubu tasked them with reinforcing those milestones and maintaining their reform pace.
Nwakuche was initially appointed by Tinubu in December 2024 before securing Senate confirmation in March 2025. Nandap earned her nomination on February 21, 2024, and was affirmed by federal lawmakers on March 1, 2024. The lengthened terms will provide sustained leadership across the nation’s correctional network and border control apparatus.
